Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: B+ --
Peter O'Toole received an Oscar nomination for playing an eccentric womanizer and boozy star (modeled on Errol Flynn) in this charming comedy set in the 1950s.

Rating: 80/100 --
Portrays the golden age of television in a warmly affectionate light, while delivering the criminally entertaining Peter O'Toole at his most devilishly charming.
Apollo Guide
Rating: 3/4 --
The script's soul-searching moments feel forced, but the comedy quotient is top-notch.

The movie concludes on a saccharine note intended to send you away smiling and it might, if you like fairy tales where no alcoholic is unlovable.

Description by OLDIES.com:
The year is 1954, and dashing Alan Swann (Peter O'Toole), an alcoholic, swashbuckling movie star, is about to make his first television appearance, on "The Comedy Cavalcade." Fearing Swann will make a drunken fool of himself on live TV, the producers ask Benji Stone (Mark Linn-Baker), one of the show's youthful writers, to watch and babysit Swann for the few days prior to his stint on the show. The unlikely duo experience numerous adventures together (such as a dinner with Benjy's star-struck relatives) and form a lasting bond in the process.
