Entertainment Reviews:
4 stars out of 5 -- It’s a beautifully mounted, restrained picture but no less moving for it.
Empire
The whole film feels very dated but also, in spite of it being "based on a true story", false.

Bitch Flicks
While Redmayne bravely steps into a unique role, it is Gerda's perpective and Vikander's acting that stand out.

San Diego Entertainer
Looks as flat as a board. It has zero interest in composition, or any elements that might suggest film is a visual language... However, the film's self-serving faux-progressiveness is a worse offense.

San Diego CityBeat
With his lush settings, yieldingly gentle tones and exquisite sense of visual design, director Tom Hooper has developed something of a house style.
Washington Post
Historically, Hirschfeld's Institute was looted by the Nazis in 1933 and all the records were burned. In-other-words The Danish Girl is a fiction based film taken from the skeletal remains of whatever scraps of paper were left behind after the Great War.

Rating: B+ --
While the film has flaws that hinder it from being fully gripping (the last act in particular), Hooper has made a dazzling picture that is just another notch on his shiny awards season belt.

Product Description:
After standing in as a female model for a painting by his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander), Danish artist Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) becomes enamored with his feminine identity and begins living as a woman named Lili Elbe. Although their marriage becomes strained, Gerda stands by Lili as she explores her true self and eventually undergoes one of the world's first gender-reassignment surgeries in the 1930s. This touching biopic was adapted from David Ebershoff's book of the same name, and helmed by director Tom Hooper (THE KING'S SPEECH).
