R.I.P.D. tries desperately to capture the same blend of action and comedy that worked so well in the "Men in Black" series, but the film only proves how difficult that balance really is.

Bridges (gorgeous and effortlessly leftfield) has saved many a dire film. He tries to hold the fort but it just can't be done.

Watching R.I.P.D., the unfamiliar viewer is given the distinct impression that this movie is probably an entertaining graphic novel -- but it's a terrible film.

It's billed as a supernatural action-adventure comedy, but its laughs are almost non-existent, its action depends on seen-it-all-before CGI trickery and much of its plot defies comprehension.

[Wiht] an enjoyably lip-smacking, scenery-and-CGI-chewing, Old West-guy performance by Jeff Bridges...

Based on a comic book that literally had to be better, writers Phil Hay, Matt Manfredi and David Dobkin did director Robert Schwentke no favors, but Schwentke directed The Time Traveler's Wife, so he had it coming.

I watched this movie with three chatty strangers on [a] Thursday night in an otherwise empty theater. Universal couldn't say "no." Looks like that's our job now.

Product Description:
A hotshot detective who was killed in the line of duty joins a supernatural police force that protects the living from the malevolent souls who have escaped judgment in this adaptation of the popular Dark Horse comic book. Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) was a cop with a reputation for getting a results when he was brutally gunned down during a violent raid. The next thing Nick knew, he was sitting in the headquarters of the Rest in Peace Department -- a supernatural police force tasked with arresting lost souls who are hiding out on Earth. His new partner Roy Pulsifer (Jeff Bridges) is a veteran sheriff with a knack for spotting a fugitive soul in disguise. Now Roy and Nick are about to face a menace that threatens to upset the ethereal balance between the physical world and the supernatural realm, and should they fail in maintaining that balance Earth will be flooded with a wave of very angry -- and very powerful -- lost souls. Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, and Stephanie Szostak co-star.
