Philip Sutherland (Clark Gable), a foreign correspondent based in Russia, falls in love with Maria Lamarkina (Gene Tierney), a lovely ballerina. They marry and Maria applies for an exit visa so they can return to the United States together. But Cold War politics intervene and she is detained in Russia by the KGB while Philip is escorted home. Months pass and Philip, who has tried every official channel, devises a desperate plan to return to Russia for his bride.
