Author Jane Stern, in her definitive book about truckers, hailed them as the last American cowboys and it s easy to see the analogy. Riding the range and riding the road can both be tough and lonely, though often appearing romantic, thanks to Hollywood movies. Some trucking songs became so popular that they did end up being Hollywood movies - Convoy, a song penned by Bill Fries and Chip Davis in the mid-70s and performed here by Ferlin Husky. The trip through Tulsa and ultimately to Chicago, as documented by driver Rubber Duck s CB conversation with other truckers, enthralled America. So much so that Fries' own version of the song hurtled to No.1 in the US and Canada, inspiring the making of the Sam Peckinpah film, Convoy.
