Rating: 3/5 -- Dean is an entertaining little independent movie. Full Review
Rating: 3/5 -- Dean is a flawed movie that sometimes flubs implementing the same quirky visually stylistic touches that match the personality of the young man himself, but it's also an engaging dramedy with a striking sense of authenticity Full Review
Rating: B- -- A likable, slightly lightweight comedy about loss, grief, love, and the unbreakable bonds between fathers and sons. Full Review
Rating: 2/4 -- A movie with which it is easy to find fault, and if you're a particular kind of person, you'll find fault with it without even trying too hard. Full Review
While the direction is capable, the writing isn't nearly as sharp as it needs to be. Full Review
3 stars out of 4 -- Demetri Martin, best known for the distinctive deadpan of his stand-up comedy, makes the transition into feature filmmaking as writer, director and star with just the right blend of humor and heartbreak.
In making his debut as writer-director with the indie dramedy DEAN, mop-topped comedian Demetri Martin spotlights the sketchpad doodling long featured in his drily idiosyncratic stand-up and TV work.
Still grieving the recent death of his mother, a Brooklyn cartoonist (Demetri Martin) heads to Los Angeles to try to make a fresh start. Although a job opportunity at an ad agency ends badly, he decides to stick around when he meets a young woman (Gillian Jacobs) at a party. Elsewhere, his father (Kevin Kline) begins a tentative romance with his real-estate agent (Mary Steenburgen). Martin wrote and directed this dramedy, which made its world premiere at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.
