Entertainment Reviews:
[Mental] sees Hogan once again utilizing his madcap zaniness and over the top flourishes to explore otherwise serious and emotionally heavy motifs.

Rating: 2/5 --
Writer-director P.J. Hogan may have based "Mental" on an actual incident from his childhood, but the crazy quilt of a movie that resulted feels anything but real.

Los Angeles Times
Rating: 2/5 --
"Mental" wildly overplays the kookiness and quirk.
New York Times
Mental skewers the easy-on and -off labels of psychiatry, but some sequences, particularly one of "bad dreams," are sophomoric.

Heart, humor and hilarity. . .and a big hunting knife! It's great to be "mental" if it means loving Mental!

Behind The Lens
4 stars out of 5 -- Packed with fine performances, this attack on suburban conformity is surprising, darkly hilarious and cleverly leaves the insanity judgement to its audience.
Total Film
The humour is every bit as rude and raucous as before, but Hogan's touch here seems heavy handed and the use of songs from The Sound of Music doesn't work nearly so well as the joyous Abba tunes that drove Muriel's Wedding.

Product Description:
His wife Shirley (Rebecca Gibney) institutionalized following a complete mental breakdown, philandering family patriarch Barry Moochmore (Anthony LaPaglia) impulsively hires eccentric vagabond Shaz (Toni Collette) to be a nanny to their five daughters. As Shaz instills the unpopular girls with a much-needed dose of self confidence, fearless shark hunter Trevor (Liev Schreiber) shows up unexpectedly, and throws a spanner in the works.
