The picture is not as colorful as the legitimate stage version, but it provides entertainment of the type that is well worth while. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- George Robey's performance as Ali Baba is forever enshrined here, and there's some interesting period casting, with Anna May Wong as Zahrat the slave girl and villain Fritz Kortner as boss of the 40 thieves. Full Review

U.S. cinemaddicts may find the photography in Chu Chin Chow inferior to most recent Hollywood musicomedies... but are likely to approve the decor, [music, and Anna May Wong,] the only performer in the cast whose name is familiar to them. Full Review

[Its] concrete vividness on the stage was probably one great secret of the play's appeal. But Chu Chin Chow has also an unusually good story and it is as a tale of adventurous intrigue that the film is most successful. Full Review

Product Description:

Exhumed from the vaults for all to see, this British musical, which tells the story of Ali Baba, hails from 1934. The film has suffered from some severe cuts in the editing room in the past, with British viewers enjoying a version that was over 20 minutes longer than the American theatrical release. Fortunately that has all been remedied here, with both version available for viewers to peruse. The original stage production enjoyed a magnificent run at His Majesty's Theatre, with a cast that included George Robey, Anna May Wong, and Fritz Kortner, all of whom feature here.
