The Silver Leaf Jazz Band is a fine sextet that at the time of this 1993 recording was comprised of trumpeter Chris Tyle, clarinetist Orange Kellin, trombonist John Gill, pianist Tom Roberts, bassist Vince Giordano and drummer Hal Smith. Together they perform a dozen Jelly Roll Morton compositions including several (such as "Mr. Joe" and "Good Old New York") dating from late in Morton's career. Their performances are spirited and enjoyable enough although without adding anything new or coming close to the power of Jelly Roll's original recordings. This CD is rounded off by the inclusion of Morton's four 1938 piano solos for The Jazz Man label. An okay release, it is primarily recommended to classic jazz fans. ~ Scott Yanow
