The strength of both families in the face of such frightening conditions provides the film with a moral center and tragic power that overcome its minor weaknesses.

The Anne Frank saga remains moving, personal, and relavant, no matter how distant we become in time.

Remains a potent statement about the horrors of war and a valid testament to the girl who could answer them by writing, 'I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.' [Blu-ray]

Stevens took some stick for casting an unknown as Anne, but his decision paid off as Perkins is refreshingly unmannered in the role.

More valuable as historical than artistic work, George Stevens' reverential Broadway-to-Hollywood transfer is marred by the weak lead performance from Millie Perkins.

Mr. Stevens has done a superb job of putting upon the screen the basic drama and shivering authenticity of the Frances Goodrich-Albert Hackett play, which in turn caught the magnitude of drama in the real-life diary of a Jewish girl.

Product Description:
One of the most powerful, personal accounts of World War II ever recorded, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK is adapted for the BBC by director Jon Jones and screenwriter Deborah Moggach. A German-born girl of Jewish descent whose family relocated to Amsterdam in 1933, Frank and her family hid out in her father's office during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, surviving for two years under cramped, crowded living conditions and relying on the kindness of others for basic living needs. During that time, the young girl eloquently documented her harrowing experiences in a diary purchased for her by her father, Otto. When the war was over, Otto was the sole surviving member of the Frank family. Returning to the space where they spent two of their darkest years, he discovered his daughter Anne's diary and decided to share it with the world.
