Shot in a grim, desaturated palette, this Polish film, directed by Jan Komasa, addresses big issues of conscience and morality. The symbolism is blunt; the drama is straightforward.
New York Times
[S]tunning, quietly subversive....A powerful, deservedly Oscar-nominated drama, and a launching pad for fresh-to-American-audiences young actor Bartosz Bielenia in the soul-contorting lead role.

Bielenia's damp-eyed performance is the broken heart of this restrained and low-key narrative.

With his chiseled facial features, wiry frame and piercingly clear, blue eyes, Bielenia is a dead ringer for a young Christopher Walken, and he carries glimmers of the veteran actor’s unsettling intensity, too.

Product Description:
Polish director Jan Komasa's Catholic-themed drama stars Bartosz Bielenia, Aleksandra Konieczna, and Eliza Rycembel. It's about a hardened young man in a youth detention center who experiences a religious awakening while serving his sentence for second-degree murder. Since his criminal background prevents him from entering the priesthood, he pretends to be a novice priest from Warsaw and begins to minister a small-town parish.
