Rating: 2/5 -- Very bad special effects mar this only-average s-f excursion. Only the giant rat-bat-whatever creature has any flair.

A science-fiction yarn, not much sillier than most of its competitors. Full Review

Product Description:

A group of intrepid explorers travel to Mars, where they encounter a variety of deadly space monsters, including a giant amoeba that refuses to let them leave. Filmed in "Cinemagic," a technique that gives the scenes on Mars an eerie, dreamlike look.

Review of The Angry Red Planet Movie Lover: from PLANO, TX US -- April, 30, 2019

The first mission to Mars, which was believed to have crashed on the surface of the red planet, returns to earth orbit. The ground crew hustles to land the spaceship by remote control.
The successfully retrieved vehicle is found to contain only two of the four-member crew: the handsome commander, Col. Thomas O’Bannion, whose skin is covered by a green parasite (lime gelatin?); and the lovely blue-eyed redheaded biologist Iris Ryan who is in a state of shock. Prof. Theodore Gettell, scientist, and Chief Warrant Officer Sam Jacobs are missing.
Under pressure to discover the cause of OBannion’s affliction and at the urging of Ryan, the biologist is given drugs to force her to remember the entire ordeal. She recalls that the crew encountered many dangers and causes for and anxiety during the first two days on the red planet. Then O’Bannion, taking the advice of Gettell, decided that having accomplished their primary goals, they should leave Mars immediately: however, a force field prevented their departure, and they decided to continue to explore on the third day.
The crew used its rubber raft in an attempt to cross a lake they had discovered. They sighted a city with enormous skyscrapers but then were attacked by a huge ameba. Jacobs was killed and O’Bannion inflicted by the great one-celled creature. They were finally able to launch from Mars but Gettell died of a heart attack. Ryan, having overcome her shock, decides to take charge of the effort to find a cure for O’Bannion.
The movie has numerous scientific errors. (Even a non-scientist like myself can see a few.) It does present some great ideas (like a great city on Mars, a huge rat-spider-crab monster and a massive ameba) but unfortunately did not have the budget to fully actualize these concepts. It was filmed in color (somewhat unusual for low-budget movies of the period) and in 16:9 wide screen. Unlike some DVDs, this product presents the movie in its wide-screen version and not as a 35mm film. As a fanciful 50s’ low-budget film dealing with space exploration, I consider it reasonably good.
