3.5 stars out of 5 -- Beanie Feldstein is all that and more....She gives wings to this smartass U.K. comedy.

As fun as a night in the mosh pit with your best mate, HOW TO BUILD A GIRL casts up-and-coming It girl Beanie Feldstein as a brainy, bawdy and irrepressibly rebellious working-class teen prodigy coming of age in Wolverhampton, U.K., in the early 1990s.

Rating: B -- Giedroyc has a real sense for the oversized emotions of adolescence - to the point that she often channels it literally into a sort of kooky magical realism. Full Review

[The film] has been directed with a quippy lightness and madcap dashes of magical realism by Coky Giedroyc.

The film’s fairy-tale first half is magical. Feldstein plays Johanna such like a cartoon princess that it seems natural when the magazine clippings on her wall come to life to give her advice.

It did not come across as a tender look back at a youthful time; it just came across as naive - not a naive character but a naive film. Full Review

If I found the ending a little too good to be true, I can't say I wasn't moved. Full Review

Product Description:

Johanna Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein) is a smart, funny, and shameless 16-year-old who is set on improving her non-existent social life. One day, her brother Krissi (Laurie Kynaston) directs her to an ad from a London-based rock magazine that is looking for a writer. Confident in her skills, she submits her review for the Annie soundtrack and as expected, the magazine writes back and she gets the job. Soon, she undergoes a makeover and starts calling herself Dolly Wilde. The film, which is based on Caitlin Moran's semi-autobiographical work of the same name, is directed by Coky Giedroyc.
