As the main producer and musician on CLASSIC 220, DJ Quik brings his eclectic pop/funk influence unmistakably to bear, which doesn't hurt a bit. Quik's R&B guitar riffs and fat, funky synth lines provide an infectious backdrop for the tag-team rapping of KK and Dee. Like Quik, 2nd II None injects a vital dose of lascivious humor into its songs. This playful sensibility, combined with the vintage guitar and analog synth sounds provided by Quik, provides an echo of '70s P-Funk (not to mention Basehead). On CLASSIC 220, 2nd II None and Quik display a sense of history exemplified by the romantic, James DeBarge-assisted "Princess," which is based around a sample of Stanley Clarke's great, obscure mid-'70s tune "Vulcan Princess." There's enough invention present throughout this album to keep clear of the saminess that plagues many lesser hip-hop productions.
