Entertainment Reviews:

Los Angeles Times - 02/18/2011
"Considering how ambitious it is, how many different narrative strands it employs, the Spanish film EVEN THE RAIN does a remarkably good job keeping its disparate elements involving and in harmony."
Wall Street Journal - 02/18/2011
"Deeply felt convictions and first-rate craftsmanship -- craftswomanship, in the case of the Spanish director, Iciar Bollain -- win out over contrivance in this parallel drama of exploitation in the New World discovered by Columbus, and the Bolivia of 2000."
New York Times - 02/18/2011
"[B]luntly political....EVEN THE RAIN is splendidly panoramic."
A.V. Club - 02/17/2011
"[T]he sharp satire casts Gael Garcia Bernal as a filmmaker whose critical portrait of Columbus' Caribbean voyage is beset by external strife and internal contradictions." - Grade: B+
Washington Post - 02/25/2011
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The dubious role of film as history, heroic act and hegemonic force is plumbed with lucid sensitivity in EVEN THE RAIN, Icia Bollain's densely woven meditation on art and politics."
Chicago Sun-Times - 02/24/2011
3 stars out of 4 -- "The performance by Luis Tosar as the producer is confident and sturdy....The movie is brave to raise the questions it does..."
Box Office - 02/22/2011
4 stars out of 5 -- "The film is at once clever, poignant and timely....The film within the film is an epic action drama with majestic performances..."
Sight and Sound - 06/01/2012
"[I]ts muscular performances and angry political edge ultimately offer a formula for an emotionally charged social cinema unafraid to wear its crusading credentials on its sleeve."
Total Film - 07/01/2012
3 stars out of 5 -- "[It] scores points for stylistic ambition and its heartfelt sympathies towards the dispossessed."

Product Description:

The politics of the past and present begin to merge during the making of a motion picture in this drama from director Icíar Bollaín. Spanish movie director Sebastián (Gael García Bernal) and his producer Costa (Luis Tosar) have arrived in Bolivia to shoot a picture about Columbus' exploration and exploitation of the New World. While Sebastián has come to Bolivia for realistic scenery, Costa has chosen the location for the cheap and abundant supply of labor. An open casting call for extras attracts far more people than the picture needs, but when Costa tries to send them away, one would-be actor, Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri), makes a strong and eloquent case for fair treatment of the locals, and Sebastián casts him as Hatuey, the chief of a native tribe who fought the invading Spaniards. As Sebastián stages scenes of revolt against would-be colonists, a real battle is brewing in Colombia -- the government has privatized the national water works, and the price of water has jumped by 300 percent, leading to protests and riots in the streets of Cochabamba. Daniel is one of the activists protesting price gouging for something as essential as water -- will Sebastián and his colleagues join him in speaking out against this injustice' TAMBIÉN LA ILUVIA (aka EVEN THE RAIN) was an official selection at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
