Rating: B- -- It's an atmospheric slow-burn that's heavy on moody insinuation and light on overt gotcha scares. Full Review

The film feels determinedly old-fashioned, awash in a hypnotic ambience that's only occasionally punctured by violence. Like his father, Perkins makes his jolts count. Full Review

Rating: B+ -- This methodical possession riff further establishes writer/director Oz Perkins as one of the few horror filmmakers whose every work will have my attention, as The Blackcoat's Daughter is a beautiful way to get the jitters. Full Review

THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER connects the pieces and ends strongly, though Perkins smartly spends more creative energy on crafting creepy situations than on pointing toward the payoff.

Rating: 3.5/5 -- It's Hitchcockian in style, however, the thrills are doused in dread to create a surprisingly effective horror movie. Full Review

Product Description:

Two female students (Kiernan Shipka and Lucy Boynton) are haunted by devilish forces while stranded at their Catholic prep school over winter break. Meanwhile, a mysterious hospital escapee (Emma Roberts) charts a course toward the school, and ends up getting a ride from a grieving, middle-aged couple (James Remar and Lauren Holly). Oz Perkins made his directorial debut with this horror feature, which received its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
