Rating: C+ -- A slender, stale yarn, set in the Edwardian period in which Olivier plays an elderly barrister who enocunters the love of his life, a famous actress (Hepbrun). Main reason to see this telepic is star power--the only teaming of Olivier and Hepburn. Full Review

Love among the Ruins is an exquisite film, which may imply and in this case does imply that it's quite a nice film. Also an elegant comedy. Full Review

Product Description:

An unorthodox love story set in Edwardian England, LOVE AMONG THE RUINS features Katharine Hepburn and Sir Laurence Olivier in their only film collaboration. A wealthy, headstrong widow and aging grande dame of the London stage (Hepburn) is accused of seducing and abandoning a young man. As the jilted gigolo sues her for breach of promise, she turns to the greatest barrister in Britain (Olivier) to defend her. The barrister turns out to be a lost love who is still crazy for her.

Following production of TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT and the 55 previous feature films that had made the director a Hollywood legend, LOVE AMONG THE RUINS was George Cukor's first made-for-television movie, and he went all out to give the film the star power and production values of a feature project. Hepburn, who had previously worked with Cukor on previous films, including THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and ADAM'S RIB, and Olivier, who reportedly needed special coaxing from both Hepburn and Cukor to lend his estimable skills to the project, glide together through the film like expert ballroom dancers, making their one on screen pairing a sophisticated, graceful, unforgettable romp.
