For some reason, Carlene Carter's career has been a sporadic affair: three albums in the late '70s and three more in the early '90s. HINDSIGHT 20/20 gathers 20 tracks from all six albums into one astonishingly good package.
Carter's '70s albums, when she was crossing traditional country with the sort of new wave smarts then-husband Nick Lowe and cohorts (including Elvis Costello, Brinsley Schwarz and Dave Edmunds) had perfected, still sound ahead of their time over two decades later. By comparison, the three '90s albums are timeless music, mixing traditional country and bluegrass with smart, poppy, electric rock and roll. Unlike Shania Twain or Garth Brooks, though, Carter's mix of country and pop takes the best from both styles and leaves what doesn't work far behind. Songs like "Me and the Wildwood Rose" and "Never Together But Close Sometimes" are as good as country rock gets.
