...An engaging rites-of-passage tale that dares to suggest winning isn't everything...

Depicts just how difficult it is to stay true to yourself and your dreams when the call of celebrity comes knocking at your door.

...[Van Der Beek] is solidly appealing...
Rolling Stone
Rating: 3/4 --
Van Der Beek and Voight weigh in with convincing performances .
Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, IL)
Varsity Blues uses all the trappings of the typical football movie-a tragic injury, a goofy linebacker, and a Big Final Game-but does so with a sly and surprisingly biting attitude towards our national sport.

The Ringer
The football scenes are involving, the acting is up to snuff, and there is something about those last days of high school that remains a solid background for even the most familiar of stories.

Product Description:
Jon "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek, TV's DAWSON'S CREEK) is the second string quarterback of the Coyotes of West Canaan, Texas. When the star quarterback (Paul Walker) suffers a knee injury just as the team is about to win their 23rd championship in 30 years, Mox is in the hot seat. Mox, however, is more interested in getting accepted to Brown, a view which is at odds with that of the pigskin-crazy town as well as that of militaristic Coach Kilmer (Jon Voight). But when Mox becomes a town hero for his football prowess, will his sights be swayed from his academic pursuits' This surprise hit from MTV Pictures was directed by Brian Robbins (HARDBALL).
