Rating: 4/5 -- Were this to be Schrader's final film, it'd be a fitting coda to his filmography, but the life on display implies he's just getting his second wind. Full Review

The small miracle of First Reformed is that its outrageousness—which flirts with satire, symbolism, climate fears, and the stuff of cheap thrillers yet still finds room for a transcendently goofy psychedelic sequence -- should come from a place of subtlety. -- Grade: B+

4 stars out of 5 -- FIRST REFORMED is peak Paul Schrader. Part character study of a man in spiritual meltdown looking for redemption, part expressionist treatise on inner turmoil and part ’70s exploitation film, the writer-director takes the issues that have suffused his entire career and makes them fresh for the 21st century.

It is the portrait of a soul in torment, all the more powerful for being so rigorously conceived and meticulously executed.

Rating: 3.5/4 -- A raw, ragged, angry work, born out a deep sense of exasperation and hopelessness in the face of rampant indifference to a world in pain. Full Review
