With this album the band came into their own, creating a kind of concept album that allowed them to adopt different guises, including The Crossfires, their surf band incarnation prior to becoming The Turtles. Furthermore, they wrote nearly all of the material themselves, including the big hit "Elenore," which was written as a sarcastic response to record company demands for a follow-up to the success of "Happy Together." "Elenore"'s hook "You're my pride and joy etcetera," was delivered with such polished sincerity that the song glided up the pop charts with ease.
The set also contains the hit "You Showed Me," written by Byrds Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. The album is a wonderful tour through surf, pop, novelty, and folk-rock music and demonstrates that this band had much more on their mind than mere hit singles.
