Withal, there is beauty and magic in the things that Cyrano says. He is still a magnificent character. Thank goodness, he is on the screen.

Your opinion of Ferrer's work will depend upon your taste in acting. This is technique work, like Olivier's. The performance feels outward bound, theatrical, expert in that manner.

Jose Ferrer's towering performance overcomes a threadbare budget and indifferent ensemble support.
Film Threat
At least some of the lines in the Rostand play are good.

Stanley Kramer's production, directed by Michael Gordon, is well acted by Jose Ferrer, who won the Best Actor Oscar.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Jose Ferrer won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the large-nosed swordsman with a poets soul. Hed played the role many times on Broadway, but his performance was captured for the ages in Stanley Kramers 1950 production. The New York Times Bosley Crowther wrote that Ferrer spoke Edmund Rostands poetic dialog with richness and clarity such as only a few other actors have managed on the screen. The story of Cyrano and his beloved Roxanne has been told many times with various actors, but until youve seen Ferrer in the lead role, you havent seen Cyrano de Bergerac.
