Tim Sutton's second feature, starring the young contemporary musician Willis Earl Beal as a musician with the same name, captures the mood of the blues with pitch-perfect sensuality. Full Review

Rating: 3 -- Beal is an excellent choice of lead, managing to hold the viewer's attention without ever coming across as so charismatic or dynamic that we question Willie's lack of success. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- "Memphis" is a gorgeous, gorgeous movie-the kind that prompts critics to say "every frame could be a painting"-but it is also proof that the woozy, opaque mode of American independent filmmaking has its limits. Full Review

Rating: B+ -- There's a self-awareness to both Sutton's direction and Willis' performance that deflates some of the potential pretentiousness from the proceedings. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- Even those who find it a bore will agree it's a pleasure to look at, and not only because Beal cleans up nicely as a suit-wearing slacker in a snappy chapeaux. Full Review

Product Description:

The Tony Award-winning musical about the birth of modern rock 'n' roll makes the leap from stage to screen in this performance featuring the original Broadway cast. During the 1950s, racial tensions in the U.S. were at an all-time high. Segregation was the norm, but colorblind DJ Harry Calhoun (Chad Kimball) only cared about the music. Inspired by the intense energy of rock 'n' roll, white Harry found himself at the epicenter of a major cultural shift after falling for a talented black singer (Montego Glover), and teaming with her to change the course of musical history.
