Product Description:

In the late '80s and early '90s, JCI teamed up with Warner Special Products for its series of Baby Boomer Classics compilations, which focused on rock, pop, and soul from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s -- in other words, the stuff that Baby Boomers grew up listening to. Lovin' Fifties, as its title indicates, is a compilation of romantic ballads and love songs from the 1950s. Of course, romantic 1950s music could mean vocal jazz and jazz-influenced pre-rock pop -- Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat "King" Cole, Jo Stafford, Julie London, Rosemary Clooney, Jeri Southern, Mel Torm‚, and others. But none of those artists (who defined the World War II generation rather than Baby Boomer tastes) are included. Instead, this compilation turns its attention to romantic doo wop and early rock & roll. Clocking in at 30 minutes, Lovin' Fifties is undeniably skimpy by CD standards -- JCI could have easily provided another 40 minutes' worth of music. But while Lovin' Fifties wins no awards for quantity, one can't complain about the quality of the material. Most of the 12 selections are first-rate examples of romantic 1950s songs, including Frankie Avalon's "Venus," the Platters' "Only You," the Crests' "16 Candles," Connie Francis' "Who's Sorry Now," and the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream." Also included is the late Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe," which came at a time when he was still considered a rock & roller and had yet to reinvent himself as the country heavyweight who produced gems like "The Image of Me," "Hello Darlin'," and "Linda on My Mind." Lovin' Fifties falls short of ideal, but all things considered, it isn't a bad CD to have in one's collection. ~ Alex Henderson
