In Philadelphia, doo wop lingered on as a popular style for years after it had been largely discarded by most of the rest of the country. These cuts are from the '60s (usually the early part of the decade), not the golden age of the '50s, which makes it a little odder than the usual doo wop rarity comp: the production is a little better and more sophisticated, and influences creep in from '60s soul and rock. You probably haven't heard of any of these acts unless you were listening to Philly radio at the time; Billy & the Essentials and the Four Js are about the most known. It's fair but derivative late doo wop, the cuts by Anthony & the Sophomores (from 1967) treading into sweet uptown soul territory. ~ Richie Unterberger
