Few artists have remained in vogue for as long as Glenn Miller. It is more than seventy years since his plane went missing over the Channel and the height of his recording success covered the four year period between 1938 and 1942, yet he is as popular today as he was during those golden days. Much of the reason for this longevity is the almost unique sound that Glenn created, itself a response to his own belief that a band ought to have a sound all of its own; it ought to have a personality. Glenn fashioned both a sound and a personality, and in so doing created one of the greatest bands of the swing era.
