Entertainment Reviews:
...A near-classic due to Magnani's earthy, Oscar-winning performance....Marisa Pavan gives a lovely performance as Mangani's sweet daughter...
Los Angeles Times
...Anna Magnani took a richly deserved Oscar for this Tennessee Williams soaper....Marisa Pavan is also very good as Magnani's daughter...
USA Today
Rating: 2.5/5 --
Anna Magnani shines ... but the stagebound feel of the film, and especially some wretched overacting by Burt Lancaster, almost sink it.

To conform to the Code, Daniel Mann's version scaled down the raw sexuality in Tennessee Williams' play. In the original work, it was raw passion, but in the film desire is approved only if it leads to marriage.

Product Description:
Having served as Tennessee Williams' muse for his 1951 stage play THE ROSE TATTOO, Italian actress Anna Magnani delivers a powerhouse performance of the role written specifically for her--and for which she won a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actress. Magnani stars as Serafina Delle Rose, a grieving Italian-American widow who has withdrawn from life and expects her budding teenage daughter Rosa (Marisa Pavan) to do the same. But just as Serafina's saintly devotion to her late husband's memory is shattered by the discovery of his marital infidelity, the attentions of an understanding truck driver (Burt Lancaster) promise to reawaken the widow's insular heart to the pleasures of love and life.
