Product Description:
The Storyville Club, first located downstairs in the Copley Square Hotel in Boston, was opened by jazz promoter and producer George Wein in 1950. Ahead of its time, it was a magnet for music titans like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, and Dave Brubeck, who performed there regularly. In February 1951 it relocated to the Hotel Buckminster in Kenmore Square but returned to the Copley Square Hotel in 1953 this time at street level. In 1959, the club moved to the Bradford Hotel on Tremont St. for one year. Billie Holiday s Storyville broadcasts present her in three phases of her last decade, which coincide with the aforementioned three different locations of the club: 1951, 1953 and 1959. This set presents all of her surviving Storyville performances for the first time ever on a single set. On the four opening tracks one of them never before released she is backed by the great Stan Getz in their only recordings together. All of this material appears here with the original radio announcements (those that still exist) and with the best sound quality ever. The Storyville broadcasts have been complemented here with 22 bonus tracks consisting of additional rare radio and TV shows by the singer recorded between 1955 and 1958. Includes 16-page Booklet
