Although by 1976 Jethro Tull's albums weren't as stellar as some of the band's earlier work, Tull remained an immensely popular concert attraction and one of rock's top names. The band's enduring popularity helped prompt the release of its first true greatest hits collection, M.U.: THE BEST OF JETHRO TULL. While 1972's LIVING IN THE PAST had contained several hits, it was more of a hodgepodge of non-LP songs and renowned album tracks. M.U.: THE BEST OF JETHRO TULL brings together only the creme de la creme.
Nearly all of the compilation's 11 tracks have remained classic rock radio staples. Tull standards like "Aqualung," "Bungle in the Jungle," "Teacher," and "Living in the Past" remain some of rock's most recognizable songs, while the album cuts "Locomotive Breath," "Fat Man," and "Nothing is Easy" are easily on par with the hits. Two shortened versions of early-'70s epics are also included, "Thick as a Brick" and "Passion Play." The loss in length does little to detract from the feel of the originals. For the casual Jethro Tull fan, M.U.: THE BEST OF JETHRO TULL is highly recommended.
