Super35 nudity and graphic sadism substitute for suggestiveness, and technology ups the gore but makes it cinematic common.

A goofy, bumbling effort without the basic decency to know how bad it is.

Mother of Tears puts a dent in Argento's rep as a horror maestro.

Washington Times
Argento is admired for his voluptuous use of color and his operatic bloodletting; this is lovely to look at, if you can stand to.

Mother Of Tears at least has some of the go-for-broke gothic spirit of [Argento's] earlier work. He's just lost the ability to shape it into something artful.
AV Club
Argento's gothic hokey horror homage to sleazy sorceress boobs, demon damsels with too much makeup, and assorted cannibalistic weirdos run amok. Girl witches gone wild, Italian style.

I wanted this to be great. Hell, I would have settled for just above average. This just sucks. All of the key elements are in place -- a solid story, great gore F/X, good sound work ... everything except Dario.

Product Description:
An ancient urn is found in a cemetery outside Rome. Once opened, it triggers a series of violent incidents: robberies, rapes and murders increase dramatically, while several mysterious, evil-looking young women coming from all over the world are gathering in the city. All these events are caused by the return of Mater Lacrimarum, the last of three powerful witches who have been spreading terror and death for centuries. Alone against an army of psychos and demons, Sarah Mandy, an art student who seems to have supernatural abilities of her own, is the only person left to prevent the Mother of Tears from destroying Rome. -- Description provided by TMDb
