Product Description:

Includes liner notes by Tony Middleton.
Harlequin's two previous releases of Carmen Miranda's work focus on the material that made her famous in Brazil. This one spotlights the songs that brought her fame in the U.S. The sources for this compilation are film soundtracks and radio transcriptions. Thus, the sound quality is not as good as the versions of these songs that were recorded for release on records. However, for the fan it is worth comparing Miranda's performance on these tracks to her expression on the released versions. The most interesting tracks on this compilation come from Miranda's appearance on the Jimmy Durante radio show, which was her last performance -- she died at her house later that night. Contrary to what one might think, Miranda does not sound the least bit sick or tired here; she exhibits the bubbly personality that ensured her rise to stardom. Unfortunately, the disc's liner notes are quite poor -- usually, Harlequin releases are very accurate and informative, but this release let a number of mistakes slip through. One of Miranda's most famous songs, "Mama eu Quero," is rendered as "Mama en Quiero." The "h" is left off "Paducah" and for unfathomable reasons, the song "Touradas em Madrid" is renamed "Voom Voom." "Four Jills and a Jeep" is "Four Gills and a Jeep," (perhaps a Britishism?). In any case, better editing and oversight of this project could have ensured that production values came up to Harlequin's usual standard. Those who are newly curious about Carmen Miranda should start with the Jasmine disc (JASCD 317). Save this disc for the fan of Hollywood musicals in general and the hardcore fan of Miranda in particular. ~ Megan Lynch
