Suburbia is for the most part wretchedly acted and broadly scripted, but it has a raw vibe that can't be denied.

...Clear-eyed compassionate melodrama....A good genre film.

Spheeris' empathy and lack of judgment allow her to conform to the pace of the world she's entered, as opposed to trying to corral it into her own.

"I was a good filmmaker ... before I sold out," says Penelope Spheeris on her audio commentary, and it's tough not to appreciate the gal's candor.

At its best, SUBURBIA plays like an L.A. version of LOS OLVIDADOS, Luis Bunuel's 1950 classic about delinquent street kids in Mexico City. -- Grade: B+

It still shows enormous empathy and sensitivity in capturing the angst and alienation of American youth, making it seem both rooted in a specific time and place and strangely timeless.

Product Description:
From the director of THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION and WAYNES WORLD comes this tale of a group of runaway -- collectively called "The Rejected" -- punks with spikey hair and strange clothes who move into a condemned suburban development and almost immediately find trouble. They become the target of "Citizens Against Crime," a group consisting mainly of laid-off GM workers. Features live performances by T.S.O.L., The Vandals, and DI.
Plot Synopsis:
"Suburbia" is director Penelope Spheeris's study of the Los Angeles punk rock scene in the early 1980s.
The story focuses on a disenchanted teenager named Evan who falls in with "The Rejected - TRs," a group of punks who live as squatters in an abandoned shack by the side of the highway. Evan and his younger brother leave their broken home in an attempt to escape their alcoholic father. With the TRs, the boys find companionship and a strange kind of harmony. But this peaceful idyll comes to an end, when a local vigilante group decides that their neighborhood problems are the punks' fault and tries to drive the group out of the neighborhood.
