The Martian is a major return to form for Scott, who seems inspired by NASA's can-do spirit. Full Review
THE MARTIAN is a film that respects the geekiest among us, and that pays off all around.
Los Angeles Times
Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN is arguably the warmest, cuddliest film ever made about the Red Planet....It’s also a visual stunner, and it features one of our most likable and dependable actors giving a performance that ranks with anything he’s ever done.
3.5 stars out of 4 -- Scott's film version of the bestselling debut novel by space nerd Andy Weir fires on all cylinders, fueled by a heroically entertaining performance from Matt Damon.
4 stars out of 5 -- Anchored by another great turn from Matt Damon, THE MARTIAN mixes smarts, laughs, weird character bits and tension on a huge canvas. The result is Scott’s most purely enjoyable film for ages.
Rating: A -- The Martian is that rare film that both thrills and inspires, so much so that i'm sure it will be seen repeatedly at the theater and at home for years to come. Full Review
3.5 stars out of 4 -- THE MARTIAN makes the future look at once spectacular and mundane. For all its splendors, the world that enfolds the characters is simply reality: the time and space in which they happen to be living.
After an exploratory mission goes awry, lone astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left for dead on the hostile surface of Mars and must use his scientific ingenuity to homestead an enclosed habitat where he can survive. Meanwhile, the astronauts he left behind realize the severity of his plight and join forces with an international coalition of scientists to launch a rescue mission in defiance of NASA protocol.
