The actors are fine, but the end result feels undercooked, largely because of all the detours and subplots. It's like a miniseries writ small. Full Review

3 stars out of 4 -- Swanberg is swimming in symbolism....The movie steps lively with buoyant humor and palpable sexual tension, but keep an eye out for the dark places.

Nearly every scene in DIGGING FOR FIRE offers up a fresh slice of life, usually embodied in a familiar face or two showing up and moving the story in a different direction.

Rating: 2.5/4 -- While it has its charms, Swanberg is tilling soil here that has been churned since humanity began, and he doesn't come up with very much that's new. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Conversations drift and weave, as do the people having them. Narcissistic melancholy dukes it out with beer-and-pot-stoked merriment. There is longing. There is foolhardiness. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- While you're watching it, "Digging for Fire" may feel slight or tentative, but its cumulative impact is entrancing. Few films about a marital rift make so much of what seems so little. Full Review

The movie, the latest of Swanberg's infidelity daydreams, moves with uneffacing assurance. It boasts a blue-chip cast clearly comfortable with improvising on the script by Swanberg and the film's star, Jake Johnson.
