Rating: 5/5 -- An incredible study and a challenge to public complicity, what sticks most from this tender and complex portrait is its subject's gaze; Kapadia forces us into Amy's mind and keeps us there. A cinematic treat. Full Review

Director Asif Kapadia doesn't need to use "re-enactments" or the other types of visual filler we see in most documentaries. Instead, as audio interviews with her colleagues, friends, and family play we see Amy herself. Full Review

[I]t is the achievement of AMY, Asif Kapadia's accomplished, quietly devastating documentary, that it makes the story of this troubled and troubling individual surprisingly one of a kind by allowing us to, in a sense, live her life along with her.

AMY remains grounded in the late singer’s humanity....AMY never feels exploitative; the singer’s addictions were another facet of deeper personal issues that went inadequately addressed.
