From Nowhere is not a visionary work, and I don't think it aims to be; but it sets a coherent agenda from the get-go and manages to make a credible and disquieting narrative out of that.

It's one thing to read about roundups of suspected illegal immigrants; it's quite another to observe the anxiety of smart, talented teenagers trying to keep their cool while under the watchful gaze of immigration officials and the police.

Depicting the struggles of three undocumented Bronx high school students to avoid deportation, From Nowhere resonates with tender compassion for its characters.

Even at its bluntest, most didactic, and sorely predictable, From Nowhere will likely move and outrage even the stoniest of the individuals.

Done right, this story about three Bronx high school students whose futures are in jeopardy because of their undocumented immigration status could have been powerful and necessary. The film itself, unfortunately, falls short.

Even at its most mechanistic ... From Nowhere largely avoids preachiness and sanctimony, preferring to wrestle with the real world in all its stubborn complexity.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Three undocumented teenagers—a Dominican girl, an African boy and a Peruvian girl—are just about to graduate high school in the Bronx. Like most teenagers, all they want to do is hang with their friends, fall in love and figure out where to go to college, but unlike their American classmates, these three live with the threat of being discovered by the authorities and deported. When one of their teachers connects them with a lawyer to help them get their papers, the teens start to dig into their family histories to assist their immigration cases. As they continue to deal with the everyday problems of adolescence, the teenagers are forced to confront their pasts and, at the same time, fight for their futures.
