Equally popular with teenage girls and music aficionados, Osaka-based independent rock band L'Arc-En-Ciel--which translates to mean "rainbow"--has become an influential force on the Japanese scene since their inception in 1991. With a distinctive look and a defiant attitude, the group's image has had a huge impact on fashion, film, manga, art, and anime trends, while their music continues to shape the sounds of up-and-coming rock bands. After developing side project and solo careers amidst rumors of a breakup, the band pleasantly surprised its fans with a 2003 tour, and the release of their album SMILE in 2004. The band's concurrent tour of the US proved the international popularity of L'Arc-En-Ciel, captured here as they play to 12,000 adoring fans in Baltimore's Otakon.
