Espinof
Gyllenhaal goes deep with his performance, with a touch of Brando-esque mumbling in his line deliveries, and some bursts of rage that would make Sean Penn blush.
Chicago Sun-Times
3 stars out of 4 -- The increasingly remarkable Jake Gyllenhaal transforms himself yet again as Billy Hope, a boxing champion near the end of his career.
RogerEbert.com
While Southpaw takes care to land punches on all the familiar targets, it also ducks and weaves around masculine stereotypes in some unexpected ways.

Quartz
Jake Gyllenhaal undergoes yet another startling physical transformation in SOUTHPAW....He grunts and punches and scratches and glares it in, bleeding copiously in set pieces that thud and splatter with woozy, percussively potent verisimilitude.
Washington Post
[R]edeemed by Gyllenhaal's virtuoso performance....The externals -- scars, tattoos and slurred voice -- don't begin to suggest the emotional depths Gyllenhaal brings to the part of a bruiser on the ropes.
Rolling Stone
Rating: 2.5/4 --
It may be less than the sum of its parts, but taken on their own, those parts often hit all the right notes.
