"Freedom" takes a compelling chapter in American history - the flight of slaves from Southern bondage to Canada via the Underground Railroad - and flattens its drama. Full Review

Rating: 1/5 -- The film tries to have the scope of "12 Years a Slave." But it's ruined by the sanctimonious songs that turn the drama into a half-baked musical. Much worse: the filmmakers' need to show that not all whites employed in the slave trade were evil. Full Review

The film leaves us with the impression that slaves' survival had more to do with sheer luck than dogged resilience. Full Review

Peter Cousens directs this drama about two generations of a slave family in America. In 1856, a slave (Cuba Gooding Jr) escapes a plantation near Richmond with his family through the Underground Railroad. Simultaneously, the story of a slave boat captain (Bernhard Forcher) on a ship bound for colonial America 100 years earlier is told, with the captain questioning the morality of his journey.
