On IT'S A MAN'S WORLD, which follows a five-year hiatus from recording, Cher moves away from her trademark vibrato and pushes her voice to new limits, trying out the role of R&B-dance diva. Taking risks at every step, she has lined up a range of disparate songs and a group of producers, including Trevor Horn (Seal), Greg Penny (k.d. lang), and Sam Ward (Michael Jackson), who impart a unique style to every track.
The common thread is Cher herself, and she has the vocal presence to pull it off. She acts as a storyteller, weaving together a collection of narrative, R&B-ish songs. Although she has left behind the hard pop-metal sound of her past, Cher remains as emotional as ever. But she now sounds softer and sweeter.
