In a swift and bloody coup, the military has overthrown the South American Republic of Tribulacion and ex-President Rivera (David Opatoshu) is shot and wounded while making his escape. So when he stumbles onto a British-owned sugar plantation, Manager Tom Jordan (David Niven) feels morally compelled to help him. Accompanied by his pregnant wife Claire (Leslie Caron), Jordan embarks with Rivera on a hazardous trek across hostile terrain, past unfriendly peasants and heavily armed soldiers on a perilous flight to the border.
