This San Francisco, California, USA-based country punk duo formed in 2001 and mysteriously opted to use the pseudonyms Chelsea Jackson (Adam Stephens, 18 June 1981, San Francisco, California, USA; guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Auggie Washington (b. Tyson Vogel, 7 November 1980, San Francisco, California, USA; drums, vocals), naming their band after a James Joyce short story. The pair had been friends since the age of five and spent most of their teenage years listening to grunge. Stephens played in a band in the mid-90s called Curmudgeon (after the 1992 b-side to Nirvana’s ‘Lithium’) before immersing himself in blues music from the deep south by artists such as Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Boy Fuller. Their sound acknowledged the cathartic and visceral aspects of both blues and grunge and subsequently Two Gallants breathed new life into the Americana genre.
