9 January 1948, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Hart first came to prominence performing with singer Maddy Prior. The duo played their first booking in 1966. They quickly built up a repertoire of traditional songs, many of which remained uncovered by other performers at the time. Having made two albums, Hart and Prior were approached by Ashley Hutchings, in 1969, with a view to joining a band made up of himself, and Gay And Terry Woods. Thus Steeleye Span was born. Having recordedHark! The Village Wait, Gay and Terry Woods left, but Hart and Prior continued together until Steeleye Span was re-formed, this time with Martin Carthy, and later Peter Knight. Hart released a solo album in 1979, and two collections of children’s songs in the 80s. He left Steeleye Span in 1984, and relocated to La Gomera, in the Canary Islands.
