Although associated with the immediate post-punk aftermath, British group Swell Maps was formed in 1972. Five years later, Nikki Sudden (Adrian Nicholas Godfrey, 19 July 1956, London, England, d. 26 March 2006, New York City, New York, USA; guitar/vocals), his brother Epic Soundtracks (b. Kevin Paul Godfrey, 23 March 1959, Croydon, Surrey, England, d. 6 November 1997, London, England; drums/vocals), Jowe Head (bass), Richard Earl (vocals) and David Barrington (vocals) founded their own Rather label, which issued material in conjunction with Rough Trade Records. Although their debut single, ‘Read About Seymour’, became a cult favourite, the band steadfastly refused to become categorized. Despite the pop element of successive singles - ‘Dresden Style’, ‘Real Shocks’ and ‘Let’s Build A Car’ - their albums offered a bewildering array of sounds ranging from garage band simplicity to new age-styled piano instrumentals....
