Run C&W were country music’s equivalent to the Traveling Wilburys. Here, four key musicians pretended to be a bluegrass band who know nothing of modern life and perform 60s soul standards as though they are traditional tunes. You can hear a herd of cows in Ray Charles’ ‘What’d I Say’ and country stars are substituted for the soul brothers in ‘Sweet Soul Music’. The group comprised of ex-Amazing Rhythm Aces leader Russell Smith (Rug Burns) together with ex-Eagles and Flying Burrito Brothers guitarist Bernie Leadon (Crashen Burns), Vince Melamed (Wash Burns) and Jim Photoglo (Side Burns), collectively known as the Burns Brothers. With such backgrounds the playing proved immaculate and the results were often hilarious.
