New Jersey, USA. This R&B vocalist is the son of noted jazz cellist Abdul Wadud, and naturally his early years were spent in a musical environment. Raised in Maryland, DeVaughn began singing in a vocal group at college and before long was devoting all his energies to making music his career. He formed the Urban Ave 31 project with vocalist Tennyson Richards and producer Omar Retnu. Beginning with 2002’s The Healing: Daily Dosage, they released a number of independent albums through Universal People Improvement and their own Urban Ave Music imprint. The trio, often augmented by additional members, enjoyed notable success on the underground circuit with their blend of socially aware lyrics, DeVaughn’s smooth soul vocals, and Retnu’s cutting edge production style.
