10 June 1970, Fort Knox, Kentucky, USA. Guitarist and singer-songwriter Doughty led the New York-based alternative rock band Soul Coughing from 1992-2000. He had recorded his solo debut during the Soul Coughing years, but Skittish was only sold at live shows after being rejected by the band’s label, Warner Brothers Records. Following the break up of Soul Coughing, and after overcoming a serious drug addiction, Doughty took to the road and established himself as a popular live attraction. The self-released 2002 Smofe + Smang: Live In Minneapolis provides an able overview of his entertaining live act. The lo-fi EP Rockity Roll brought him to the attention of long-term fan Dave Matthews, who agreed to release a new album that Doughty had recorded prior to the EP.
