11 February 1914, Seattle, Washington, USA, d. 21 June 2002, Riverside, California, USA. A composer, singer and pianist, Dennis was born into a musical family. His father was a well-known singer and his mother played the violin; at one stage they were both part of a vaudeville act called the Five Musical Lovelands. Early in Dennis’ life the family moved to Los Angeles, California, where he attended San Rafael High School, eventually directing the school’s dance orchestra. In 1933 he joined Horace Heidt’s band as a pianist, and sang with Alice King, one of the King Sisters. Some years later he formed a band with Dick Haymes, and subsequently served as an arranger and accompanist for Martha Tilton, Margaret Whiting and the Stafford Sisters. In 1940, when Jo Stafford became a member of the Pied Pipers with the famed band of Tommy Dorsey, she recommended Dennis as a staff arranger and composer.
