25 November 1964, Ellensburg, Washington, USA. Lanegan maintained a remarkably fecund solo career while still part of his regular band, Screaming Trees. Initially providing an outlet from the snarling guitars and punk attitude of his work with the Conner brothers, Lanegan’s solo career has developed into a fascinating, ongoing personal exploration of the American folk and blues tradition. The Winding Sheet was originally intended to be an EP of blues songs recorded with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Although a spellbinding update of Lead Belly’s ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’ was included from the aborted sessions, the resulting album of Lanegan originals ended up being recorded with Screaming Trees drummer Mark Pickerell, guitarist Mike Johnson and producer Jack Endino on bass. The much delayed follow-up, 1994’s Whiskey For The Holy Ghost, comprised 13 originals which rivalled Nick Cave in their almost biblical...
