30 September 1943, Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. McCoo first reached stardom as a founding member of the Fifth Dimension. That group was formed in Los Angeles in 1965 as the Versatiles, and enjoyed a number of Top 10 hits between 1967 and 1972, including ‘Up, Up And Away’, ‘Stoned Soul Picnic’, ‘Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In’ and ‘Wedding Bell Blues’. McCoo married Fifth Dimension member Billy Davis Jnr in 1969, and together they left the group in 1975 to form an act as a duo. Signed to ABC Records, their first single, ‘I Hope We Get To Love In Time’, was a minor chart entry in 1976, but the album of the same title yielded ‘You Don’t Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show)’, a number 1 hit.
